As Strong As The Grass
“A foraging wild creature, intent above all upon survival, is as strong as the grass.” – Richard Adams
Several months ago, I told you about dichotomous Baltimore and the reasons I both love and hate it. I told you about food deserts and how 20% of Baltimore is considered one. (Though being a resident of this city and experiencing firsthand how hard it can be to find healthy food – greenish? – 20% seems sorta low.) And then I told you about the project I and a few good people put together that addresses Baltimore’s need for healthy food and suggests a way to “create a city that feeds its residents.” (P.S. That’s our tagline. Holla!)
Ladies and gentlemen, our presentation is complete and the voting is ON.
Our proposal, named Forage Baltimore, will fortify the existing edible landscape, connect the various organizations already at work in the city, and bolster their efforts. It will place edible plants in neglected, accessible spaces so that the city’s canopy is increased and people will have access to free, nutritious food. It will utilize existing resources to increase green space and edible landscapes. Working with citizens, it will create a series of stewards who care for these precious food-producing resources, and empower organized groups to modify and maintain their own edible landscapes.
In short, Forage Baltimore will KICK ASS.
And also get healthy food to people who need it.
An added bonus? Our plan can be implemented city-wide and is relatively easy compared to other programs presented. No offense to my worthy opponents – namely you profitable architectural firms with your fancy-schmancy CAD drawings and load-bearing walls* - but Forage Baltimore is a solution for everyone in Baltimore City and it doesn’t need a building permit. Take THAT!
You can check out our proposal at the Urbanite Project website. While you’re there, VOTE FOR US! City Hearth has put together a super nice proposal, but they’re kicking our butts and making me feel inadequate. Help a girl out and vote for a foragable Charm City. GO TEAM FORAGE BALTIMORE!
*I actually love load-bearing walls. I think they’re sexy. And kind of important.
I AM: DOING some serious pimping out of Forage Baltimore, our 2012 Urbanite Project. Big pimpin’ spendin’ the G’s, yo!
